EPRI and the Open Compute Project Foundation (OCP) have announced a strategic collaboration designed to accelerate digital innovation and further develop the potential of data centers to serve as flexible resources for the power system.
OCP, a nonprofit international organization, is a rapidly growing global community committed to designing, using, and enabling the mainstream delivery of highly efficient, scalable computing and data center facilities. EPRI’s DCFlex initiative aims to produce guidance and standards that accelerate data center deployments, shorten interconnection queues, and help the energy and digital sectors collaborate without compromising grid reliability.
With shared commitment and overlapping stakeholders, the two global research organizations can strengthen the foundation for deeper technical integration and support industry‑wide impact across global markets, improving pathways to connect rapidly growing digital infrastructure to power systems and optimizing technical designs to develop the best framework for operationalizing data center flexibility.
“We’re in the midst of an energy revolution, and it must be smart, flexible, and innovative to keep rates affordable for customers across the globe,” said EPRI President and CEO Arshad Mansoor. “Through this collaboration with OCP, EPRI is combining rigorous power‑system science with open, scalable data center innovation to advance practical solutions that enable data centers to operate as flexible, grid-supporting resources—strengthening reliability and affordability for all.”
EPRI and OCP’s collaboration brings together extensive expertise and expansive global communities ranging from technology providers to multiple stakeholders in the energy and data center industries. EPRI complements the OCP community with real‑world field demonstrations underway at data centers operating across Europe and the U.S., exploring flexible load solutions that streamline interconnection processes and support wider adoption of compute flexibility at scale.
“With a growing member base and top-tier data center expertise coming together with a single vision, our collaboration creates opportunities for harmonized standards, shared testing environments, and coordinated guidance for implementing flexible, resilient, and affordable data center solutions,” said Zane Ball, chief technology officer for OCP.
